FEB 2018 RANGELAND & OPEN SPACE CONSERVATION DRIVE SUCCESS!!!
The Land Trust is currently working with landowners, agencies, and other partners to establish conservation easements on working ranches totaling to permanently protecting more than 16,000 contiguous acres of foothill rangeland “from the valley to the pines”. This project area ranges from 300 to 4,000 feet, containing a mosaic of grasslands, blue oak woodlands, steep-canyon perennial streams, mixed chaparral, and black oak/ponderosa pine woodlands at higher elevations. This region provides critical winter range for California’s largest migratory deer herd, habitat for over 50 special-status plant and animal species, and over 50 miles of perennial streams. The Project area also links important migration corridors and prime habitat for mountain lion, black bear, golden eagle, and other wide-ranging predators.
Fragmentation and encroachment from ranchette and semi-urban development, small vineyard conversions, as well as legal and illegal marijuana grows present direct and imminent threats to the Project area. Other threats include commercial rock harvesting and clearing of trees, shrubs, and woody debris for range improvements.
